China Unveils World’s Largest Water Conservancy Network

China has completed the world's largest and most comprehensive water conservancy system, marking a milestone in its efforts to address water security and sustainable development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), officials announced Monday.

Achieving Scale and Accessibility

The system, developed under the guidance of the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources, now serves the majority of the population, integrating reservoirs, irrigation networks, and flood-control infrastructure. Over 30,000 new projects were launched in the past five years, with investments exceeding $120 billion, according to ministry data.

Economic and Environmental Impact

This infrastructure supports agricultural productivity, industrial growth, and urban water supply while mitigating flood risks in vulnerable regions. Analysts note its role in stabilizing food production and attracting overseas investors to water-dependent sectors like manufacturing and renewable energy.

Global Relevance

As climate change intensifies water scarcity, China’s model offers insights for developing economies in Asia and beyond. The network also aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing resource efficiency and disaster resilience.

‘This achievement reflects China’s commitment to long-term planning and technological innovation,’ said a ministry spokesperson during the press conference.
