China Advances Alzheimer’s Strategy Amid Aging Population

As World Alzheimer’s Month draws global attention to dementia care, China is intensifying efforts to address the growing health challenge posed by Alzheimer’s disease (AD). With over 16 million AD and dementia patients reported in 2024, experts emphasize the critical need for early intervention and systemic solutions.

Professor Guo Yi, a leading neuroscientist at Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, told CGTN that “early screening during mild cognitive impairment stages offers the best window for effective management.” While AD’s memory loss symptoms often mirror normal aging, Guo notes its progression accelerates dramatically compared to typical age-related decline.

The Chinese government has launched a multi-agency national action plan targeting dementia prevention and care. Coordinated by the National Health Commission, the initiative aims to establish a comprehensive system covering screening, treatment, and rehabilitation by 2030. This comes as China’s population aged 60+ approaches 400 million by 2040, according to UN projections.

Key strategies include:

  • Nationwide cognitive health education campaigns
  • Standardized early screening protocols
  • Expanded dementia care facilities
  • Specialist training programs

While no cure exists, Guo stresses that managing risk factors like hypertension and diabetes through lifestyle changes could prevent up to 40% of dementia cases. The plan aligns with WHO recommendations for global dementia response, adapted to China’s unique demographic challenges.
