China Probes Mexico’s Trade Barriers Amid Global Tensions

China has launched an official investigation into Mexico's trade and investment restrictions, signaling escalating friction in global commerce. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced the probe on Thursday, targeting Mexico's proposed tariff hikes on Chinese goods and other measures that Beijing claims unfairly disadvantage its businesses.

The investigation follows Mexico's recent moves to increase tariffs for countries without free trade agreements, including China. A ministry spokesperson warned such actions could harm global supply chains and undermine confidence in Mexico's business environment. 'All countries must oppose unilateralism and protectionism,' the spokesperson stated, emphasizing China's commitment to defending its industries' interests.

Analysts suggest the dispute reflects broader tensions as nations navigate shifting trade alliances. The ministry pledged to conduct an 'objective and fair' review, potentially leading to countermeasures if violations of international trade rules are found. The outcome could impact over $100 billion in annual bilateral trade spanning electronics, automotive parts, and renewable energy components.

This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of North American trade policies, particularly following recent U.S. tariff increases. China maintains it will 'resolutely safeguard legitimate rights' while urging dialogue to maintain stable cross-border commerce.
