China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has achieved sweeping infrastructure advancements, according to a white paper released Friday by the State Council Information Office. The document highlights transformative progress in transportation, energy, and digital connectivity, positioning the region as a key hub in Asia's evolving economic landscape.
Transport Networks Redefine Connectivity
Railway mileage in Xinjiang has nearly doubled since 2012, reaching 9,202 km by 2024. This expansion connects all prefectures and over 80% of county-level areas, facilitating cross-regional trade. Highway networks similarly grew to 230,000 km, linking 90% of county administrative regions through modernized roads.
Skyways and Digital Highways Take Flight
The region now boasts 595 air routes – including 25 international connections to 17 countries and regions – creating an aviation network spanning Eurasia. Digital infrastructure shows parallel growth: 1.78 million km of optical cables ensure 1000M fiber access in all counties, 5G coverage in towns, and broadband in villages.
Strategic Development Framework
The white paper outlines a comprehensive strategy covering 10 critical networks, from logistics to computing power. These developments align with China's broader Belt and Road Initiative, enhancing Xinjiang's role in regional energy distribution and cross-border commerce.
