Xinjiang Emerges as Key Gateway for China’s Western Opening-Up Strategy

China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is positioning itself as a critical hub for Eurasian connectivity, according to a white paper released by the State Council Information Office. Titled "CPC Guidelines for Governing Xinjiang in the New Era: Practice and Achievements," the document outlines ambitious plans to transform the region into a "golden channel" for cross-continental trade and cultural exchange.

Infrastructure Expansion Drives Growth

Xinjiang now operates 19 ports, including the year-round Kunjirap Port, facilitating unprecedented trade flows. The China-Europe Railway Express recorded 16,400 freight trains passing through the region in 2024 – maintaining annual volumes above 10,000 for five consecutive years.

Economic Partnerships Multiply

From just a few partners in the 1950s, Xinjiang's trade network now spans 211 countries and regions. The 2023 establishment of the China (Xinjiang) Pilot Free Trade Zone accelerated this growth, attracting over 9,000 enterprises within its first year and accounting for 30% of the region's total import-export value.

Strategic Positioning in Belt and Road Initiative

The white paper emphasizes Xinjiang's integration into national strategies, particularly its role in strengthening ties with Central Asia and Europe. This development aligns with broader efforts to enhance regional stability through economic cooperation and infrastructure modernization.
