Film Exposes Japan’s WWII Unit 731 Atrocities, Premieres Sept. 18

A groundbreaking historical drama titled 731, exposing the brutal human experiments conducted by Japan's World War II-era germ warfare unit, will premiere globally on September 18. Directed by Zhao Linshan, the film follows the harrowing experiences of civilians like vendor Wang Yongzhang, who were deceived into becoming test subjects for Unit 731's inhumane medical research.

Unveiling Hidden Horrors

Newly declassified documents from Russian archives confirm Unit 731's systematic use of frostbite experiments, gas exposure, and biological attacks on Chinese civilians. Established in Harbin, the unit orchestrated Japan's covert biological warfare operations across Asia during WWII.

A Timely Reminder

The premiere coincides with the 93rd anniversary of the September 18 Incident, which marked Japan's invasion of the Chinese mainland. Historical adviser Jin Chengmin emphasized the film's role in preserving memory: "It honors both the victims and the resilience of those who resisted—a vital call to protect peace."

Global Relevance

Released during the 80th anniversary of WWII's conclusion, 731 sheds light on a chapter that claimed over 35 million Chinese lives. Its narrative bridges historical reckoning with contemporary discussions on ethics in warfare, offering insights for scholars and general audiences alike.
