China Accelerates Green Transition With Ambitious Energy Storage Targets
The Chinese mainland has launched a comprehensive three-year plan to expand its new-type energy storage capacity, aiming to install over 180 million kilowatts by 2027. This initiative, announced by the National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration, is projected to attract 250 billion yuan ($35.2 billion) in direct investments while strengthening grid stability amid rapid renewable energy adoption.
Powering Sustainable Growth
The blueprint outlines 21 strategic measures including large-scale energy storage deployment at power plants, technological innovation in battery systems, and enhanced international collaboration. By comparison, the planned capacity could theoretically meet the annual electricity needs of all U.S. households, underscoring the project's global-scale impact.
Building on Existing Momentum
This push follows significant progress in the sector, with installed new-type storage capacity reaching 73.76 million kW by end-2024. Officials emphasize the plan aligns with China's broader climate goals and high-quality development agenda, prioritizing standardization and talent cultivation to maintain technological leadership.
"This initiative bridges our renewable energy ambitions with practical grid management solutions," stated a National Energy Administration representative, highlighting the role of storage systems in optimizing solar and wind power integration.
