China has expressed strong opposition to Mexico's reported plan to impose tariffs of up to 50% on vehicles and other goods imported from China and select Asian economies, calling the move a violation of fair trade principles. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed the issue on Thursday, emphasizing China's commitment to inclusive globalization and rejection of protectionist policies.
"Unilateral measures that discriminate against Chinese products not only harm bilateral cooperation but also disrupt global supply chains," Lin stated. He reiterated China's right to take "necessary actions" to protect its interests but stressed a preference for dialogue to resolve disputes.
The spokesperson highlighted the economic ties between China and Mexico as fellow "Global South" nations, noting that bilateral trade reached $111 billion in 2023. Analysts suggest the tariffs could impact Mexico's access to Chinese renewable energy technology and electric vehicle components critical for its manufacturing sector.
This development comes as Mexico becomes a growing hub for nearshoring, with Chinese investments in automotive and electronics manufacturing rising by 18% year-on-year. Observers warn the tariff dispute may test economic cooperation between emerging markets amid shifting global trade dynamics.
