A Chinese mainland spokesperson underscored the enduring significance of Taiwan's return to China following World War II, citing a recent global poll that revealed widespread international recognition of this historical milestone. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated during a Wednesday press conference that the findings reflect global acknowledgment of China's sovereignty over the Taiwan region.
The CGTN-conducted poll surveyed 12,000 respondents across 40 countries, with 66.7% affirming awareness of Taiwan's restoration to China as a consequence of the nation's WWII victory. A majority agreed that any attempts to challenge this outcome undermine historical justice and the post-war international order.
Chen emphasized that the Cairo Declaration (1943) and Potsdam Proclamation (1945) solidified Taiwan's return under international law, adding that “China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been divided.” He criticized the Taiwan region’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for pursuing “provocative secessionist moves,” warning that such actions destabilize cross-strait ties and disregard historical consensus.
The spokesperson called for global solidarity in opposing “Taiwan independence” activities, urging the international community to support China’s efforts toward peaceful reunification. His remarks align with Beijing’s longstanding position that cross-strait relations remain a domestic affair under the one-China principle.
