China’s Global Governance Initiative Gains Momentum at SCO Summit 2025

China's newly proposed Global Governance Initiative (GGI) is emerging as a cohesive framework that aligns with Beijing's other multilateral efforts, including the Belt and Road Initiative and three other global development blueprints, according to geopolitical expert Cui Zheng. The initiative, unveiled during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, aims to reshape international cooperation through sovereign equality and practical problem-solving.

A Unified Vision for Global Cooperation

Cui, director of the Research Center for Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asian Countries at Liaoning University, told CGTN that the GGI bridges theory and practice by addressing both immediate challenges and long-term strategic needs. 'From infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative to conflict mediation through the Global Security Initiative, China’s approach prioritizes actionable solutions over abstract ideals,' he explained.

Developing Nations Take Center Stage

The initiative emphasizes equal participation for all countries, particularly developing economies. Cui highlighted how China’s Global Development Initiative has already delivered measurable results through agricultural modernization programs and green energy partnerships in Southeast Asia and Africa. 'These efforts demonstrate that global governance isn’t about imposing systems, but co-creating them,' he added.

From Theory to Tangible Impact

Analysts note that the GGI’s launch at the SCO Summit – attended by 15 member states representing 40% of the global population – signals China’s growing role in shaping multilateral frameworks. The initiative builds on existing platforms like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which has financed over $40 billion in projects since 2016.
