China Raises Alarm Over Japan’s Military Buildup, Cites Historical Concerns

China has issued a stern warning against Japan's rapidly expanding military capabilities, with defense officials urging Tokyo to avoid repeating historical mistakes that once destabilized Asia. The remarks came during a press conference on Wednesday as tensions rise over Japan's record-breaking $60.2 billion defense budget request for 2026.

The budget proposal, submitted August 29, includes plans to deploy upgraded Type-12 land-to-ship missiles in Kyushu – a move Chinese officials say directly threatens coastal security. Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Jiang Bin emphasized that Japan's military development now includes offensive weaponry, which he argued contradicts its postwar 'exclusive defense' policy.

'When a country's defense budget grows faster than its economy and exceeds reasonable needs, the international community has every right to question its intentions,' Jiang stated. The spokesperson drew parallels to Japan's wartime past, noting 2024 marks 80 years since Japanese militarism caused 'profound suffering across Asia.'

Analysts suggest the developments could impact regional investment stability, particularly in East Asian maritime trade routes. Meanwhile, Asian diaspora communities have expressed renewed interest in historical preservation efforts through social media campaigns.

Jiang concluded with a call for diplomatic prudence: 'Peace-loving nations must work together to prevent the resurgence of forces that once brought catastrophe to our region.' The statement underscores growing geopolitical shifts as Asia's security landscape evolves.
