China Unicom Secures Satellite Mobile License to Boost Connectivity

China Unicom has joined a growing list of telecom providers authorized to offer satellite mobile communication services, following a license approval by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) this week. The move positions the carrier to provide direct-to-cell satellite coverage for emergency response, maritime operations, and remote regions lacking traditional network infrastructure.

Expanding Satellite Services Across China

China Telecom, which obtained a similar license in 2023, already delivers satellite-to-mobile connectivity, while China Mobile currently provides satellite-based messaging via the BeiDou navigation system. MIIT's latest approval signals accelerated progress in China's satellite communication sector, with new guidelines released last month aiming to streamline market access and foster innovation through public-private partnerships.

Roadmap to 2030: Building a Satellite-Driven Future

By 2030, China plans to establish a robust regulatory framework and industrial ecosystem for satellite communications, emphasizing low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks and direct-to-device services. State-owned enterprises are expected to lead in developing satellite internet infrastructure, while private companies will drive advancements in niche areas like the satellite Internet of Things.

Collaboration for Consumer Access

MIIT emphasized the need for telecom operators to collaborate with supply chain partners to enhance service affordability and reliability. As competition intensifies, analysts predict satellite connectivity could become mainstream within the decade, benefiting industries ranging from disaster management to rural healthcare.

The developments align with China's broader strategy to strengthen technological self-reliance and global competitiveness in next-generation communication systems.
