Severe Weather Alerts Issued as Typhoon Approaches
The National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a yellow typhoon alert and blue heavy rain warning Sunday morning as Typhoon Tapah, the 16th typhoon of 2023, intensified over the South China Sea. Southern regions of the Chinese mainland, including Guangdong and Guangxi, are preparing for torrential rains and winds exceeding 140 km/h.
Projected Path and Risks
As of 9 a.m. Sunday, Tapah’s center was located 435 km southeast of Yangjiang City, Guangdong, with maximum winds of 23 meters per second. Forecasters predict landfall between Zhuhai and Zhanjiang from September 8 midnight to noon, bringing Category 10-12 winds (28-33 m/s). Coastal areas could see rainfall exceeding 230 mm, while Jiangsu, Anhui, and Chongqing may experience localized flooding.
Economic and Travel Disruptions Expected
Authorities warn of potential flight cancellations, port closures, and power outages in affected regions. Business hubs like Shenzhen and Guangzhou are monitoring the storm’s trajectory closely, with supply chain analysts flagging risks to manufacturing and logistics. Travelers are advised to check advisories before visiting southern coastal areas this week.
