Beijing Gala Honors WWII Heroes, Champions Peace Through Art

Eighty-two years ago, in Liulaozhuang Village, Jiangsu Province, 82 Chinese soldiers sacrificed their lives defending villagers against a Japanese force 20 times their size. Their bravery inspired 82 local youths to join the fight, cementing the village’s legacy as “Heroic Liulaozhuang.” This story was vividly retold during a commemorative gala at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The 90-minute event, themed “Remembering History, Honoring Fallen Heroes, Cherishing Peace, and Looking into the Future,” blended songs, dances, and dramatic performances to recount China’s 14-year resistance. It highlighted the resilience of Chinese civilians and soldiers against overwhelming odds, emphasizing values like national unity, courage, and an unyielding belief in victory.

Youth Lead the Charge in Preserving Legacy

Notably, young directors and screenwriters born in the 1990s played a key role in crafting the gala’s programs, infusing historical narratives with fresh perspectives. Over half of the performers were in their early 20s, reflecting a generational bridge between past sacrifices and modern aspirations. “The spirit of resistance isn’t just history—it’s a call to action for today’s youth,” one participant remarked.

The event also underscored China’s post-war achievements and its vision for a peaceful future. As the nation advances toward modernization, officials emphasized the need to uphold this legacy, urging younger generations to contribute to national rejuvenation.
