China Launches First National Science Popularization Month

China marked a milestone in science education today with the launch of its inaugural National Science Popularization Month, a 30-day nationwide initiative to ignite public enthusiasm for scientific innovation. Organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the event features interactive exhibitions, cutting-edge research showcases, and activities designed to bridge the gap between laboratories and everyday life.

At Beijing's National Communication Center for Science and Technology and China Science and Technology Museum, visitors explored groundbreaking displays, including an electronic fabric with conductive fibers that light up under alternating current. 'This hands-on approach helps demystify complex concepts,' explained Wei Lei, a museum staffer, during a live demonstration.

Over 100 events are planned nationwide throughout September, supported by universities, enterprises, and research institutes. Ni Zhiyu of CAST emphasized the program's scale: 'We're creating a science festival that reaches every region, using multimedia and participatory activities to engage all citizens.'

The initiative follows China's revised Science and Technology Popularization Law, which took effect in December 2024 and formally designates September as an annual platform for promoting scientific literacy. Highlights include first-time public viewings of innovations from 30 research teams, presented through immersive 'watch, listen, and touch' formats.
