Stanley Tong Explores Tech-Driven Future of Chinese Cinema at SCO Event

Hong Kong director Stanley Tong, known for action-packed blockbusters like Police Story 3, recently offered a rare glimpse into China's cinematic evolution during a tour of Qingdao's China Movie Metropolis. The visit coincided with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Film and Television Week, highlighting cross-border cultural collaborations.

"The scale of innovation here rewrites what's possible in storytelling," Tong remarked while exploring soundstages equipped with virtual production tools. He emphasized how mainland China's film infrastructure now rivals Hollywood, citing motion capture systems and AI-assisted editing as game-changers adopted over the past decade.

The director, who pioneered Hong Kong-mainland co-productions, noted shifting industry dynamics: "When I filmed CZ12 in 2012, we built physical sets. Today, young directors here create entire worlds digitally."

Organizers framed the SCO event as a bridge for cinematic exchanges across Asia, with 18 participating countries and regions screening films. Tong's participation underscores growing synergies between mainland China's technological capabilities and Hong Kong's production expertise.
