China Dominates Global Nanotech Patents, White Paper Reveals

China holds 43% of the world's authorized nanotechnology patents over the past 25 years, cementing its leadership in this critical field, according to a white paper released at a Beijing industry forum on Sunday. The findings highlight the country's growing influence in shaping next-generation technologies.

By the Numbers

From 2000 to 2025, global authorities granted 1.07 million nanotechnology patents, with 464,000 originating from China – more than the combined total of the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Semiconductor devices, catalytic chemistry, and biomedical applications form the core of China's patent portfolio, with innovation hubs emerging in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.

From Labs to Markets

The Chinese Academy of Sciences leads global institutions with 23,400 patents, while China's nanotechnology patent commercialization rate exceeds 8%. The sector now employs nearly 10 million people across 34,500 enterprises, with 739 companies publicly listed. Analysts project the global nanotechnology market will reach $1.5 trillion by year's end.

Strategic Growth

Presented at the 10th International Conference on Nanoscience and Technology, the white paper underscores China's systematic approach to R&D investment. 'These patents form the backbone of future industries,' noted a forum participant, speaking anonymously due to event protocols.
