China, Switzerland Strengthen Ties in High-Level Talks

China's National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji met with Swiss Council of States President Andrea Caroni in Beijing this week, marking a significant step in bilateral relations as the two nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties.

Anniversary Sparks New Momentum

Zhao highlighted Switzerland's status as one of the first Western countries to recognize the People's Republic of China, emphasizing how the relationship has become a model of 'equality, innovation, and win-win cooperation.' Both parties agreed to leverage their anniversary to implement leadership consensus and enhance their innovative strategic partnership.

Taiwan Question Emphasized

The Chinese leader reiterated that the Taiwan question remains central to China's core interests, urging Switzerland to uphold the one-China principle. This diplomatic stance aligns with Beijing's longstanding position on cross-strait relations.

Trade Agreement Upgrades Ahead

With the China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement driving $60 billion in annual bilateral trade, discussions focused on accelerating its modernization. Zhao proposed expanding cooperation in green energy and digital innovation sectors while maintaining stable industrial supply chains.

Multilateral Cooperation Pledged

Both leaders committed to strengthening the World Trade Organization's role and fostering open international markets, particularly in advanced manufacturing and financial services – key sectors where Swiss expertise meets Chinese market potential.
