China has launched the first operational section of its second Sichuan-to-East natural gas pipeline, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to enhance energy security and optimize resource distribution. The project, managed by PipeChina, adds 3 billion cubic meters of annual transmission capacity to China's energy grid, with full completion expected by 2027.
Project Scope and Immediate Impact
The newly operational western section spans 56.15 kilometers, linking Sichuan's Anyue Gas Field to Chongqing's Tongliang District. This segment integrates gas from PetroChina's Gaoshiti block into the national network via the Zhongwei-Guiyang Gas Pipeline. Li Wang of PipeChina Southwest Pipeline Company emphasized that the pipeline will accelerate development of Sichuan-Chongqing's 100-billion-cubic-meter gas production base while improving energy access for industries and households along its route.
Strategic National Infrastructure
Stretching 4,269 kilometers from Sichuan's Luxian County to Zhejiang's Wenzhou upon completion, the pipeline will ultimately transport 20 billion cubic meters annually. Its phased construction includes western (Sichuan-Chongqing-Hubei) and eastern (Hubei-Zhejiang-Fujian) sections, designed to alleviate energy pressures in central and eastern regions during peak demand periods.
Economic and Environmental Implications
The infrastructure strengthens China's capacity to transition toward cleaner energy sources, aligning with national carbon neutrality goals. By connecting major production zones with high-consumption areas, it promises to stabilize energy costs for manufacturers while reducing reliance on coal in coastal economic hubs.
