Xizang Boosts Livelihood Projects with $280M Investment

Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has announced a 2 billion yuan ($280.4 million) injection into 10 new social welfare initiatives, expanding its commitment to improving living standards across the high-altitude region. The measures target critical areas including neonatal healthcare, childcare subsidies, and support for vulnerable populations.

Seven programs will provide universal benefits, such as free medical insurance for newborns and enhanced health checks for workers in extreme environments. Three targeted initiatives will assist low-income households with winter heating costs and recognize distinguished contributors to society.

This expansion complements the region's existing 14.8 billion yuan budget for 28 ongoing welfare projects through 2025. Since 2021, Xizang has directed more than 80% of its annual fiscal expenditure toward public welfare programs, totaling 860.1 billion yuan over four years.

'These policies reflect our focus on addressing residents' most pressing needs,' a regional government representative stated. The 2024 allocation marks a record 84% of Xizang's total fiscal budget dedicated to livelihood improvements.
