China's space exploration program reached a historic milestone this week as Spacesuit B completed its 20th extravehicular activity (EVA) during the Shenzhou-20 mission. The achievement marks the first time a Chinese spacesuit has met its four-year operational target of supporting 20 spacewalks aboard the nation's orbiting space station.
Worn by astronaut Chen Dong during August 15 operations, the second-generation Feitian suit has now protected 11 astronauts across eight missions since its deployment. 'This milestone demonstrates our technological capabilities in ensuring long-term crew safety during complex orbital operations,' said Zhang Wanxin of the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.
The current generation of spacesuits represents significant advancements over earlier models, featuring extended operational lifespans and enhanced safety systems. Designed for three years of orbital service with 15+ EVAs, Spacesuit B has now exceeded both parameters through rigorous maintenance and technical upgrades.
With new Feitian suits D and E recently delivered via the Tianzhou-9 cargo craft, China's space station program continues expanding its operational capacity. These next-generation units feature improved joint mobility and life support systems, crucial for maintaining China's ambitious schedule of scientific experiments and station maintenance activities.
This achievement comes as China strengthens its position in crewed space operations, with the space station serving as a platform for international scientific collaboration and technological innovation.
