Chinese Climbers Dominate Speed Events at 2025 World Games

Chinese athletes delivered a historic performance at the 2025 Chengdu World Games on Thursday, securing gold medals in both men's and women's sport climbing speed events while claiming five of six available podium spots. The victories underscored China's growing dominance in competitive climbing ahead of future global tournaments.

Chu Shouhong clinched the men's title with a blistering 4.80-second sprint, while Deng Lijuan – fresh off her 2024 Paris Olympics silver medal – edged teammate Qin Yumei by 0.01 seconds to claim the women's crown in 6.40 seconds. The women's podium saw a full Chinese sweep, with Zhou Yafei securing bronze through a tense 6.31-second finish that narrowly beat Indonesia's Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi.

"Seeing three Chinese flags rise together was incredibly moving," Deng told reporters post-event. "My focus wasn't on rivals – just perfecting each movement."

Despite missing Olympic silver medalist Wu Peng, China's squad thrived against elite competition including Indonesia's Olympic champion Veddriq Leonardo and USA world record holder Samuel Watson. The strong international turnout – featuring athletes from 15 countries and regions – highlighted the event's significance as a key Olympic qualifier.

Analysts note China's systematic training programs and youth development initiatives are yielding results, with sport climbing emerging as a strategic focus area. The Chengdu victories position Chinese climbers as strong contenders for upcoming international championships.
