International World Games Association (IWGA) President Jose Perurena has lauded Chengdu's preparations for the 12th World Games, calling the host city's efforts "exceptional" during a pre-event press conference. With the Opening Ceremony set for Thursday night, organizers promise a celebration blending Chengdu's cultural heritage with modern innovation.
"Chengdu has surpassed all expectations in creating world-class facilities and operational frameworks," Perurena stated, emphasizing the event's potential to set new standards for multisport competitions. The Games will feature 256 medal events across 34 sports, attracting nearly 4,000 athletes from 116 countries and regions.
Xu Xingguo, Executive Vice President of the organizing committee, revealed the ceremony will spotlight Sichuan's unique Bashu culture through cutting-edge technological displays. "This is more than an athletic event – it's a bridge connecting Chengdu's 3,000-year history with global audiences," Xu noted.
Chinese breaking star Liu Qingyi, fresh from her Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medal win, told reporters she aims to push her limits at the Games. "Every competition is about surpassing myself," said the 22-year-old athlete, whose discipline will be featured alongside emerging sports like drone racing.
The 12-day event comes as China strengthens its position in hosting international sporting competitions, following the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. With venues incorporating sustainable design and smart city technologies, Chengdu's infrastructure upgrades are expected to leave lasting economic and social benefits for the region.
