The 2025 China-Britain Culture and Art Festival opened with a historic flourish in Edinburgh as the "Elegance and Charm of Shanghai" concert captivated audiences at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. Organized by the Asian Association of Culture Commerce and Education in Europe, the event marked the first time the erhu—a two-stringed traditional Chinese instrument—headlined a full ensemble performance outside Asia.
Nearly 1,000 guests, including former Edinburgh Lord Provost Donald Wilson, witnessed the groundbreaking showcase. Three generations of erhu players performed, blending classical and contemporary styles. Professor Wang Yongde of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music emphasized the instrument's cultural significance: "Our music carries the spirit of the Chinese people—it must be felt, not just heard."
The evening began with a vibrant Highland dance by Scotland's Brenda Ronnie School of Dance students, symbolizing the festival's cross-cultural mission. For many young attendees, the concert offered their first exposure to Chinese traditional music.
By merging Shanghai's melodies with Scotland's artistic heritage, the event created a dialogue between cultures, proving music's universal power to connect communities. The festival continues through August, featuring over 20 collaborative performances.
