China’s Adora Flora City Cruise Ship Reaches Key Construction Milestone

China's second domestically-built large cruise ship, Adora Flora City, achieved a critical milestone this week as its first main generator was successfully powered up, according to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The development marks the start of the vessel's verification phase, bringing it closer to completion.

Dubbed the "heart" of the ship, the main generator will supply power to electrical systems and propulsion, enabling the 142,000-ton vessel to operate autonomously. CSSC emphasized that this breakthrough reflects China's growing expertise in high-value shipbuilding, a sector long dominated by European firms.

The Adora Flora City follows its sister ship, Adora Magic City, which entered service in 2023. Both vessels are part of China's push to establish itself as a global maritime innovator while boosting domestic tourism infrastructure. Analysts note the project aligns with broader economic goals to advance high-tech manufacturing capabilities.

With over 90% of components now domestically sourced, the project underscores China's progress in overcoming technical barriers. The verification phase will test safety and performance metrics ahead of the ship's anticipated 2025 debut.
