China's top legislator Zhao Leji has called for deepening the China-Switzerland innovative strategic partnership during a four-day official visit to Switzerland, emphasizing mutual respect, economic collaboration, and multilateral coordination as pillars of bilateral relations.
As chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Zhao met Swiss parliamentary leaders Maja Riniker and Andrea Caroni, highlighting 75 years of diplomatic ties rooted in "equality, innovation, and win-win" cooperation. He noted Switzerland's early recognition of the People's Republic of China and its role as a model for cross-cultural partnerships.
Zhao urged both nations to implement existing leadership agreements and accelerate negotiations to upgrade their free trade pact – the first between China and a continental European country. Since its implementation, bilateral trade has surged, with Swiss investment in the Chinese mainland reaching new heights. Zhao welcomed further Swiss capital inflows and proposed expanding collaboration in finance, arts, education, and local governance.
The legislator stressed that respecting core interests and maintaining high-level exchanges remain crucial for stable relations. He invited Swiss parliamentarians to visit China, aiming to foster understanding of the country's multidimensional development.
Both countries pledged to combat unilateralism and strengthen multilateral frameworks, particularly in global trade governance. Zhao emphasized their shared commitment to peace and multilateralism, proposing enhanced coordination through platforms like the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
This visit underscores China's strategy to deepen European partnerships through economic complementarity and cultural diplomacy, positioning Switzerland as a key bridge between Eastern and Western governance models.
