China has called on Japanese authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens following a violent attack on two Chinese nationals in Tokyo, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
The incident occurred in Chiyoda Ward at approximately 9 a.m. local time, where four unidentified assailants reportedly assaulted the victims with iron pipes before fleeing in a vehicle with a Kansai license plate. Both men sustained serious head injuries and were hospitalized.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun confirmed that China’s embassy in Japan had “immediately expressed concern” to Japanese officials and is actively verifying details of the case. The victims, who stated they had no prior connection to the attackers, emphasized that no demands for money or other items were made during the assault.
Tokyo police are currently investigating the incident and searching for the suspects. The attack has drawn attention to broader concerns about the safety of Chinese nationals abroad, particularly in light of increasing cross-border travel and business activities.
Analysts suggest the incident may prompt discussions about bilateral cooperation on public security matters between China and Japan, two of Asia’s largest economies. The Chinese government has consistently emphasized the importance of protecting its citizens overseas, a priority that resonates strongly with diaspora communities and frequent travelers.
