China has solidified its position as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, releasing 1,509 large AI models – more than any other country – according to data unveiled at the 2025 World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. This accounts for 40% of the 3,755 models developed worldwide, underscoring the nation’s accelerating technological ambitions.
A Thriving Ecosystem
The Chinese mainland now hosts over 5,100 AI companies, representing 15% of the global total, with 71 AI unicorns driving cutting-edge advancements. Yu Xiaohui, president of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), highlighted the sector’s “promising innovation landscape,” fueled by collaboration between tech giants, startups, and specialized firms.
Economic Engine
Listed companies and unicorns are powering China’s AI growth, generating 70% of the industry’s revenue. Key innovation areas include autonomous driving, intelligent robots, and AI chips, with large language models dominating recent breakthroughs. Yu emphasized AI’s role as a “key driver” for high-quality economic development and societal progress.
Global Collaboration
The WAIC, themed “Global Solidarity in the AI Era,” concluded with participation from 40+ countries and international organizations. The concurrent High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance highlighted growing efforts to align technological advancement with cross-border cooperation.
