China Protests Japan Over Taiwan Official’s Visit, Stresses One-China Principle

China has issued a formal diplomatic protest to Japan following a visit by a senior Taiwan region official, escalating tensions in East Asian relations. The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo lodged “solemn representations” on Friday after Lin Chia-lung, head of the Taiwan region’s foreign affairs department, conducted activities in Japan that Beijing claims promote separatist agendas.

Minister Shi Yong of the Chinese Embassy confronted Masaki Kanai, Japan’s top Asian affairs diplomat, stating Tokyo had “disregarded repeated demarches” about Taiwan’s status. “The Taiwan question sits at the very core of China’s core interests,” Shi emphasized, calling Japan’s actions “provocative” and demanding compliance with bilateral agreements.

The dispute centers on four foundational political documents establishing Japan’s recognition of Beijing as China’s sole legitimate government. Analysts suggest this development could impact regional stability and business confidence, particularly in technology and manufacturing sectors with cross-strait supply chains.

This diplomatic clash occurs as Asian markets navigate post-pandemic recovery, with investors monitoring how geopolitical tensions might affect trade flows through critical shipping lanes like the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese government reaffirmed its position that “the one-China principle remains an inviolable red line” in international relations.
