China Urges Restraint as Thailand-Cambodia Tensions Rise

China has called for calm amid escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, emphasizing its commitment to regional stability. Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, stated on Thursday that Beijing is actively engaging with UN Security Council members and both Southeast Asian nations to de-escalate the situation.

"Cambodia and Thailand are not only good neighbors to China but also important members of ASEAN," Fu said during a press interaction in New York. "We urge restraint and dialogue to prevent further instability."

The remarks follow reports of heightened diplomatic friction between the two ASEAN members, though specific details of the dispute remain undisclosed. Fu highlighted ASEAN's longstanding tradition of resolving conflicts through peaceful means, expressing confidence in the bloc's ability to navigate the crisis.

With the UN Security Council preparing an emergency meeting, China has positioned itself as a mediator, leveraging its regional influence to facilitate communication. Analysts suggest Beijing's proactive stance aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen ties with Southeast Asian partners amid shifting global dynamics.

As a key trade partner and investor in both nations, China's appeal for stability carries significant weight. Business leaders and policymakers across Asia are closely monitoring developments, recognizing the potential economic ripple effects of prolonged discord in the region.
