China, Mauritania Mark 60 Years of Ties, Elevate Strategic Partnership

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani exchanged warm congratulatory messages on Saturday, commemorating six decades of diplomatic relations and ushering in a new chapter of strategic cooperation between the two nations.

In his message, President Xi highlighted the enduring strength of bilateral ties, emphasizing mutual respect and equitable collaboration since establishing relations in 1964. He noted the steady growth of political trust and practical cooperation across sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and agriculture, which have delivered tangible benefits to both peoples.

The leaders first met at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit in Beijing, where they agreed to elevate relations to a strategic partnership. Xi reaffirmed China's commitment to deepening policy coordination with Mauritania and expanding collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative framework.

President Ghazouani praised the 'unshakable friendship' forged through decades of shared development goals and diplomatic support. He specifically highlighted Mauritania's appreciation for China's role in advancing African infrastructure modernization and digital transformation efforts.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay also exchanged messages, with Li pledging to strengthen practical cooperation in emerging fields like green energy and food security. The Mauritanian leader reiterated adherence to the one-China principle while expressing enthusiasm for increased Chinese investment in critical sectors.

Analysts view the upgraded partnership as part of China's broader strategy to enhance South-South cooperation, particularly in resource-rich West Africa. The anniversary comes as Chinese companies accelerate renewable energy projects in Mauritania's desert regions, aligning with both nations' climate commitments.
