China Criticizes U.S. Fentanyl Tariffs as Barrier to Drug Control Cooperation

China has accused the United States of undermining bilateral anti-drug efforts through its imposition of trade measures linked to fentanyl, escalating tensions in an area previously seen as potential common ground. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated Thursday that Washington's 'fentanyl tariffs' jeopardize cooperation vital to addressing the opioid crisis, while emphasizing China's position that the root cause of America's drug problem lies domestically.

'The U.S. insists on weaponizing trade measures while ignoring China's goodwill gestures,' Lin told reporters at a regular press briefing. 'This approach not only damages China's legitimate interests but also destroys the foundation for joint action against illicit substances.'

The remarks come amid strained relations between the world's two largest economies. While China maintains strict controls on fentanyl-related substances, U.S. officials have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement against precursor chemical shipments. Analysts suggest the tariff dispute could impact broader efforts to combat transnational drug trafficking networks.

Lin urged Washington to adopt 'a rational approach based on equality and mutual respect,' stressing that China remains open to dialogue. The development highlights the complex interplay between trade policy and global health challenges as both nations navigate competing priorities.
