Chengdu Makes History with First-Ever World Games Torch Relay

The 12th World Games, set to begin in August in Chengdu, will introduce a groundbreaking tradition: its first-ever torch relay. This milestone event, starting July 26, will traverse three Sichuan Province cities—Chengdu, Deyang, and Meishan—showcasing both athletic spirit and regional cultural pride.

Organizers revealed a meticulously designed ceremonial system featuring artifacts from ancient Baodun, Sanxingdui, and Jinsha civilizations. The torch base, flame basin, and other components incorporate millennia-old motifs, creating a tangible link between modern sportsmanship and the Chengdu Plain’s 4,500-year history. “This fusion honors our roots while celebrating global unity,” a local cultural advisor noted.

Business analysts highlight the relay’s potential to boost tourism and cross-sector collaborations in southwest China. Meanwhile, diaspora communities worldwide anticipate livestreams of the flame’s journey through iconic Sichuan landmarks. The Games’ expanded global visibility could further position Chengdu as a hub for international cultural-sporting exchanges.
