Regional Cooperation Advances at ASEAN Meetings
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted deepening China-ASEAN collaboration during the ASEAN Plus foreign ministers' meetings in Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing progress on economic integration and maritime stability. Three key agreements emerged: finalization of the upgraded China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (version 3.0), a five-year action plan for strategic partnership, and accelerated negotiations for a South China Sea Code of Conduct.
Economic Openness vs. Protectionism
Addressing U.S. tariff policies, Wang stressed "openness brings progress" as a cornerstone of China's development strategy. He outlined China's initiatives including zero-tariff treatment for least developed nations and cross-regional cooperation frameworks, contrasting them with what he described as "irresponsible" protectionist measures disrupting global supply chains.
New Vision for Maritime Stability
On the South China Sea, Wang proposed reframing regional discourse toward "peace, stability and cooperation." He confirmed completion of the third reading for the Code of Conduct draft, with 2026 targeted for finalization. The minister reiterated China's position on historical arbitration cases, emphasizing adherence to international law through multilateral consultation.
