Dunhuang Academy Unveils New Strategies to Preserve Cultural Heritage

At the recent 'Inter-Civilization Exchanges and Mutual Learning' forum, Su Bomin, Director of the Dunhuang Academy, outlined groundbreaking measures to protect the ancient treasures of Dunhuang—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a jewel of the Silk Road.

Su emphasized the use of advanced digital technologies, including 3D scanning and AI-driven analysis, to document and restore fragile murals and sculptures in the Mogao Caves. 'We're bridging ancient artistry with modern innovation to ensure these cultural treasures survive for millennia,' he stated during the CGTN interview.

The academy is also expanding international collaborations, partnering with institutions in over 20 countries and regions to share conservation expertise. This aligns with China's broader efforts to promote cross-cultural dialogue under its Global Civilization Initiative.

For travelers and researchers, Su highlighted new virtual reality platforms that offer immersive access to restricted cave sites, balancing preservation with public engagement. The measures aim to strengthen Dunhuang's role as a living museum of Buddhist art and Central Asian history.
