China Coast Guard Expels Japanese Vessel Near Chiwei Yu

China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels took decisive action this week after a Japanese fishing boat entered disputed waters near Chiwei Yu, escalating regional maritime tensions. CCG spokesperson Liu Dejun confirmed the vessel was expelled Wednesday following “illegal entry into China’s territorial waters,” with law enforcement measures implemented under Chinese jurisdiction.

The incident occurred near Diaoyu Dao, a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea that China consistently claims as its “inherent territory.” Liu emphasized Beijing’s stance that Tokyo must “immediately cease all illegal activities” in the area, reaffirming China’s commitment to protecting sovereignty through patrols and enforcement.

Analysts note such encounters highlight ongoing geopolitical friction in resource-rich East Asian waters. While no injuries or property damage were reported, the event underscores the delicate balance between regional fishing rights and strategic territorial claims.

The CCG’s swift response aligns with China’s increased maritime law enforcement presence amid competing claims in the East and South China Seas. Observers suggest such incidents may influence diplomatic talks and regional security dialogues in coming months.
