China, Canada Can Be ‘Partners in Mutual Success,’ Says Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Canadian counterpart Anita Anand in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, emphasizing opportunities for strengthened bilateral cooperation despite historical challenges. The meeting coincided with dual milestones: the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and 20th anniversary of the China-Canada strategic partnership.

Wang, a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, framed the relationship as one free of fundamental conflicts: "There are no territorial disputes or geopolitical conflicts between our countries. We can become partners that achieve mutual success through practical cooperation." He urged both nations to implement leadership consensus and foster "objective, rational attitudes" toward collaboration.

The Chinese foreign minister contrasted Beijing's multilateral approach with recent U.S. trade policies: "While some abuse tariffs and disrupt global economic order, China offers zero-tariff treatment to least-developed nations and promotes shared modernization." He called for upholding UN Charter principles and equality among nations.

Anand affirmed Canada's commitment to rebuilding ties: "We're ready to accelerate restoration of exchanges in trade, health, and culture through open communication." Both sides expressed interest in creating favorable conditions for business engagement, with Wang specifically urging improved environments for Chinese investors.

Analysts suggest the dialogue signals potential stabilization after recent diplomatic tensions, particularly as both economies seek diversified trade partnerships amid shifting global supply chains.
