Lion & Qilin Dances Revive Tradition in Shenzhen

Hong Kong Lion Dance Champion Tsang Hoi-ping is breathing new life into ancient cultural practices by reintroducing vibrant lion and Qilin dances to Pingshan, Shenzhen. The dynamic performances, rooted in centuries-old folklore, are captivating younger generations and rekindling pride in regional heritage.

Tsang, who trained under master performers in Hong Kong, told KhabarAsia: 'These dances aren’t just art—they’re living history. Seeing teenagers line up to learn the drum rhythms gives me hope for our traditions.' The Qilin dance, featuring mythical hooved creatures symbolizing prosperity, has drawn particular attention for its intricate costumes and acrobatic movements.

Local schools have begun incorporating workshops into extracurricular programs, with students participating in mask-painting and choreography design. 'It’s cooler than video games,' said 14-year-old participant Li Wei, demonstrating basic lion dance footwork. Economists note growing interest in cultural tourism, with travel agencies adding traditional performance routes to Shenzhen itineraries.

The revival comes as urban centers across the Chinese mainland see renewed appreciation for intangible cultural heritage. Similar initiatives in Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces have reported increased youth participation in traditional arts over the past two years.
