Hong Kong residents will witness a powerful display of China's naval modernization as the Shandong aircraft carrier-led fleet docks in the city from July 3 to 7. The visit, approved by the Central Military Commission, marks the ninth such event since Hong Kong's return to China in 1997 and the third military port call this year.
The fleet – comprising the Shandong carrier, Yan'an and Zhanjiang missile destroyers, and Yuncheng missile frigate – will host public tours and cultural exchanges. These activities aim to demonstrate China's progress in national defense technology and foster closer ties between the People's Liberation Army Navy and Hong Kong compatriots.
"This visit continues our tradition of building mutual trust through openness," the official statement noted, highlighting the military's commitment to transparency. Previous naval visits have drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors, with 2024's earlier events setting new attendance records.
Analysts observe these visits serve dual purposes: showcasing China's growing maritime capabilities while reinforcing national identity. The Shandong, China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, represents significant advancements in naval engineering and strategic defense systems.
