China Condemns U.S. Military Ties with Taiwan, Warns of Escalation

A Chinese defense spokesperson has accused the United States of attempting to 'drag Taiwan into the flames of war' through military collaboration, as tensions rise over recent American actions involving the Taiwan region. The remarks came during a Thursday press briefing following reports of U.S.-led joint air exercise observations by Taiwan's military representatives and a proposed $500 million military aid package in the 2026 U.S. defense budget.

Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang emphasized China's firm opposition to any U.S.-Taiwan military exchanges, stating: 'Such actions severely violate the one-China principle and jeopardize peace across the Taiwan Strait.' The comments reflect growing concerns over Washington's increasing security engagements with the island region.

Analysts suggest the developments could complicate efforts to stabilize relations between Beijing and Washington, particularly as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities continue to seek international support. Zhang warned that 'relying on external forces for separatist agendas will only harm Taiwan residents' fundamental interests.'

The situation highlights delicate balancing acts in Asia-Pacific geopolitics, with business leaders monitoring potential impacts on cross-strait trade flows and regional stability. Over $1.2 trillion in annual trade passes through the Taiwan Strait, a vital waterway for global semiconductor supplies.
