Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a strategic alignment between the two nations as they celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations.
Wang emphasized China's appreciation for Singapore's firm adherence to the one-China principle and opposition to independence for the Taiwan region. The veteran diplomat, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that President Xi Jinping's recent meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong laid important groundwork for future collaboration.
"Our nations stand at a pivotal moment to transform leadership consensus into tangible outcomes," Wang stated, highlighting emerging technologies and regional connectivity as key focus areas. Balakrishnan echoed this vision, proposing joint efforts with ASEAN partners to foster "open, rules-based multilateralism" while advancing economic integration.
The ministers identified digital economy initiatives and sustainable infrastructure projects as potential growth drivers, building on existing partnerships like the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement. Their discussions come as Southeast Asia's tech sector is projected to reach $1 trillion valuation by 2030, according to recent industry reports.
