China Urges Syria to Step Up Counterterrorism Efforts at UN Meeting

China\u2019s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, called on Syrian interim authorities to \u201cearnestly fulfill\u201d counterterrorism obligations during a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday. Fu emphasized the urgent need to combat groups like the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), designated as a terrorist organization by the Security Council.

\u201cMultiple violent terrorist incidents have occurred in Syria,\u201d Fu stated, warning of the risk of extremist resurgence amid the country\u2019s fragile political and economic recovery. He expressed concern over reports of foreign terrorist fighters being integrated into Syria\u2019s national army, urging immediate action to address security gaps.

Fu highlighted Syria\u2019s critical juncture, noting recent reconciliation efforts but stressing that instability persists. He called for international cooperation to restore peace, enabling Syrians to \u201clive in stability and dignity.\u201d

The envoy also addressed escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, cautioning that further conflict could destabilize Syria and the broader Middle East. \u201cIf the conflict spills over, Syria will inevitably bear the brunt,\u201d he warned, underscoring regional security implications.
