African and Chinese filmmakers forged new connections at the China-Africa Film Week, held June 12–16 in Changsha and Xiangtan as part of the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo. The event showcased 24 films from both regions across six cinemas, drawing audiences into a shared cinematic journey.
Under the theme "Bridging Continents, Connected by Light and Emotion," the program blended screenings with cultural diplomacy. Activities included a development forum exploring co-production opportunities, a film music concert celebrating cross-continental artistry, and interactive Q&A sessions where directors discussed storytelling techniques.
"This isn’t just about movies—it’s about building understanding," said one attendee, reflecting on post-screening discussions that spanned themes from urban life to rural traditions. The event highlighted growing interest in Africa’s film industry, which produced over 2,500 movies annually pre-pandemic, while introducing Chinese audiences to narratives beyond mainstream Hollywood.
Organizers emphasized the role of film as a "soft power" tool amid deepening economic cooperation between China and African nations. With bilateral trade exceeding $260 billion in 2023, cultural initiatives like this aim to complement commercial ties with grassroots connections.
