China Rejects U.S. Claims on Geneva Talks Consensus

China has firmly denied U.S. allegations that it violated agreements from recent bilateral economic and trade talks in Geneva, escalating tensions amid ongoing tech and trade disputes. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated Tuesday that Washington's claims were 'disinformation' and urged immediate corrective measures.

'China has rigorously implemented the Geneva consensus with full responsibility, while the U.S. has undermined it through unilateral actions,' Lin said during a press briefing. He cited recent U.S. restrictions on AI chip exports, bans on chip design software sales to Chinese firms, and visa revocations for Chinese students as examples of 'discriminatory measures' violating mutual understandings.

The spokesperson emphasized that such moves 'harm China's legitimate rights' and disrupt global supply chains. Over 20 formal complaints have been lodged with U.S. officials since May, according to ministry records reviewed by KhabarAsia.

Analysts suggest the friction could impact upcoming multilateral trade negotiations. 'This public rebuttal signals Beijing's growing frustration with Washington's dual approach of dialogue and containment,' said Dr. Mei Xiong, a trade policy expert at Singapore's Asia-Pacific Research Institute.

Lin called for the U.S. to 'respect facts, cease coercion, and jointly maintain the Geneva consensus' – a framework both nations had previously hailed as stabilizing bilateral relations. The development comes as WTO data shows Chinese tech imports from the U.S. fell 18% year-on-year in Q2 2024.
