Beijing Rejects 'Cold War Mentality' in Asia-Pacific Disputes
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Tuesday denounced a U.S.-backed multilateral security initiative as regional tensions escalate over maritime claims. Lin Jian criticized a joint statement by defense chiefs from the United States, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, calling it an attempt to "hype up imaginary threats" and "stoke confrontation."
The remarks came after the four nations pledged to strengthen maritime defense cooperation, with analysts noting indirect references to China's activities in the South China Sea and East China Sea. China has lodged formal diplomatic protests, labeling the move as "bloc politics" that contradicts regional peace efforts.
"Such actions reflect a Cold War mentality completely out of step with our times," Lin stated at a regular press briefing. "No exclusive clique will deter China from safeguarding its legitimate territorial and maritime rights."
The spokesperson emphasized Beijing's preference for direct dialogue between neighboring states to resolve disputes, urging external powers to "stop twisting facts and interfering in regional affairs." The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of naval maneuvers and resource exploration activities in contested waters.
