Leading scientists from the Chinese mainland and 14 countries and regions convened in Beijing this weekend, urging intensified global collaboration to address pressing challenges like climate change and food security through scientific innovation. The call came during a seminar marking the 70th anniversary of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academic Divisions.
Bridging Borders Through Science
CAS President Hou Jianguo emphasized the interconnected nature of modern sustainability challenges, stating: "Emerging technologies like AI and quantum computing are reshaping our approach to ecological conservation and energy solutions." He outlined CAS plans to expand international partnerships in critical fields, including joint research programs and open data initiatives.
Decades of Productive Partnerships
Australian Academy of Science President Chennupati Jagadish highlighted 50 years of Sino-Australian scientific cooperation as proof of cross-border collaboration's effectiveness. "From quantum tech to AI, shared scientific goals transcend geopolitical boundaries," he noted. Russian Academy of Sciences Vice President Sergei Chernyshev reaffirmed commitment to strengthening bilateral research ties with China.
Global Science for Global Challenges
International Science Council President Peter Gluckman praised CAS as "a leader in both research and partnership-building." The seminar concluded with participants endorsing enhanced talent exchanges and multilateral projects targeting UN Sustainable Development Goals. Over 60 attendees included representatives from science academies across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
