Xi’an-Almaty Tourist Train Launches, Boosting China-Kazakhstan Ties

A new cross-border tourist train connecting Xi'an, the ancient capital of China's Shaanxi Province, and Almaty, Kazakhstan's cultural hub, embarked on its inaugural journey Thursday. The 57-hour route symbolizes deepening cultural cooperation between the two nations, offering travelers a unique overland exploration of Silk Road heritage.

Carrying 234 passengers, the train departed Xi'an at noon and will traverse 2,300 kilometers before arriving in Almaty on Saturday. Railway official Hui Lixia explained the journey comprises domestic and international segments, with return trips scheduled from June 5-7. The service operates under streamlined border procedures developed through bilateral agreements.

This initiative aligns with the Belt and Road framework's emphasis on people-to-people connectivity. Analysts note it creates fresh tourism opportunities while supporting regional economic integration. For business travelers, the route offers an alternative perspective on Central Asian markets beyond conventional air travel.

The train's launch coincides with growing interest in historical trade routes, particularly among cultural explorers and diaspora communities seeking ancestral connections. Its operational model is being closely watched by other Asian nations considering similar cross-border rail tourism projects.
