Chinese Cultural Expedition Launches in Tajikistan with Music and Innovation

DUSHANBE – The harmonious blend of traditional Chinese melodies and modern green technology marked the launch of a landmark cultural expedition in Central Asia this week. Students from Dushanbe’s Confucius Institute performed classical compositions at the China-Tajikistan Cultural Exchange Center on May 28, as three electric vehicles from Chinese automaker BYD departed with CGTN journalists for a two-week journey across the region.

The event underscores deepening cultural and economic ties between China and Central Asia, with organizers highlighting cross-border collaboration in education, sustainable technology, and soft diplomacy. The expedition will traverse key Silk Road hubs, documenting local responses to China’s growing regional engagement.

Cultural Bridges Meet Green Mobility

Confucius Institutes – China’s global educational and cultural outreach centers – have expanded to 21 locations across Central Asia since 2004. The Dushanbe branch has trained over 15,000 students in Mandarin and traditional arts since its 2009 establishment.

The use of BYD’s new energy vehicles (NEVs) symbolizes China’s dual focus on cultural outreach and green industry leadership. NEV exports to Central Asia grew 214% year-on-year in Q1 2024, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce.

Strategic Implications

Analysts note the timing coincides with increased Chinese investment in Central Asian infrastructure and energy projects. The China-Central Asia gas pipeline’s fourth line began construction last month, while bilateral trade reached $89 billion in 2023 – a 27% increase from pre-pandemic levels.

For Tajikistan – where Chinese companies account for 68% of foreign direct investment in transportation projects – the cultural initiative aligns with broader economic partnerships. The expedition’s route through Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan will showcase multiple Belt and Road Initiative collaborations.
