China Strengthens Ties with Pacific Island Nations at Key Forum

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized mutual respect and collaboration during the Third China-Pacific Island Countries (PICs) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Xiamen, Fujian Province, as the two sides marked 50 years of diplomatic relations. Co-chaired with Kiribati's President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau, the meeting highlighted China's commitment to fostering a 'community with a shared future' in the Pacific region.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reiterated China's stance on non-interference in internal affairs and pledged support for PICs' sovereignty and development. He outlined plans to deepen cooperation under the Global Development Initiative and Belt and Road framework, including accelerated free trade negotiations, agricultural technology sharing, and expanded tourism partnerships.

Practical measures announced include 200 small-scale livelihood projects and the deployment of 56 medical personnel, with a focus on traditional Chinese medicine, to enhance local well-being. Wang also proposed exchanges on poverty reduction and grassroots governance, underscoring China's role as a 'reliable partner' in regional stability and prosperity.
