Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Solomon Islands' Minister for Foreign Affairs Peter Shanel Agovaka reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Xiamen this week. The meeting coincided with the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Gathering – a platform strengthening Beijing's engagement with Pacific nations.
Five Years of Progress
Wang highlighted 'all-round development' in bilateral relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 2019, noting expanded political trust and concrete cooperation outcomes. 'Our partnership stands as proof that mutual respect and shared development goals create lasting foundations for international relations,' stated Wang, who serves on the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.
Shared Principles, Practical Outcomes
The Chinese minister praised Honiara's adherence to the one-China principle while pledging increased support for infrastructure and social development programs. Agovaka reciprocated by criticizing 'unilateral approaches that divide nations,' in an apparent reference to U.S. policies, while committing to deepen collaboration in law enforcement, healthcare, and cultural preservation.
Both sides agreed to accelerate implementation of existing cooperation agreements, particularly in education and sustainable development sectors. The talks concluded with plans for enhanced ministerial-level exchanges through 2024.
